New Economy Movement or NEM is a veteran blockchain project launched in mainnet in 2015. It was the first decentralized network completely written in Java programming language. The network is also known by its cryptocurrency ticker XEM. Initially, NEM went live as a fork of Nxt, an early blockchain project and decentralized payments network. It leverages an eccentric consensus type called Proof-of-Importance (PoI).
In 2021, NEM developers introduced enterprise-focused Proof-of-Stake (PoS) smart contracts platform Symbol with its own token XYM.
The blockchain employs Eigentrust++ security algorithm for transaction privacy. NEM supports smart contracts, so XEM RPC APIs are suitable for DeFis, on-chain wallets, exchange systems, decentralized identity protocols, and so on.
