This upgrade - known as Moran hardfork - was designed to mitigate the issues caused by the recent $100 mln hack of the bridge between the elements of BNB Chain infrastructure. The fork didn’t affect regular users of BNB Chain, its wallets, dApps and services.
Only node operators of BNB Chain - including Coinbase Cloud, HashQuark, TrustWallet, and so on - were invited to update their software to the latest ‘emergency’ version.
BNB funds of all users are SAFU
On October 11, 2022, BNB Chain released an official post-mortem BNB Chain: A Decentralized Response. Its representatives stressed that no wallets were compromised by the attacker: it only damaged the cross-chain interaction between BNB Smart Chain and BNB Beacon Chain.
Namely, the malefactor managed to attack BNB Token Hub to mint ‘extra’ BNB tokens. Then, he/she managed to partially withdraw his/her loot. In total, 2 million BNB (approximately $570 million) were minted while $100 million were taken by the attacker.
Meanwhile, the operations between non-custodial BNB wallets remained unaffected: transfers were up and running during the entire period of attack and recovery.
