Today, on October 17, 2022, Bitcoin (BTC) network users saw their transactions delayed thanks to a rare occurrence in blockchain.

Bitcoin (BTC) fails to produce one block in over an hour

According to the data shared by public blockchain explorers, Bitcoin (BTC) network failed to mine its block for over 85 minutes.

Bitcoin (BTC) miners spend an enormous amount of time to add the block 759 054 to the mainnet. US-based miner Luxor managed to find its hash. Meanwhile, the exact reasons for such an impressive delay remain unknown.

This delay resulted in over 13,000 unconfirmed transactions stuck in mainnet. As a result, Bitcoiners (BTC) were forced to wait for their transactions to be included into the block for over an hour.

How long is Bitcoin (BTC) block time?

Normally, it takes 10 minutes for Bitcoin (BTC) to add a block (this indicator is also named ‘block time’). To keep it stable, Bitcoin (BTC) difficulty is adjusted every two weeks. It is made to ensure that the network will be working with constant speed regardless of the amount of miners working at this or that moment.

At the same time, Thaddeus Dryja, an inventor of Bitcoin’s second-layer solution Lightning Network, noted that there is nothing unusual in this behavior of the first blockchain. Such delays can occur every 35 minutes thanks to Bitcoin’s network design.
