Rootstock (RSK) operates as a Bitcoin sidechain, enabling Ethereum-compatible smart contracts while leveraging Bitcoin's security through merged mining. It uses a two-way peg system called Powpeg to allow seamless transfers between Bitcoin (BTC) and its native token, RBTC, which is pegged 1:1 with BTC. By combining Bitcoin’s proof-of-work consensus with Ethereum's flexibility, Rootstock supports decentralized applications (dApps) and DeFi services with faster transaction speeds and lower costs.
Rootstock is highly secure due to its integration with Bitcoin’s proof-of-work consensus and merged mining, which utilizes over 50% of Bitcoin's hash power. The Powpeg system ensures secure transfers between BTC and RBTC by using tamper-proof hardware security modules (PowHSMs) for key management. Additionally, the platform benefits from Bitcoin’s decentralization and robust security infrastructure, making it resistant to censorship and malicious attacks.
To use Rootstock, users must convert BTC to RBTC via the Powpeg system, enabling interaction with dApps and smart contracts on the Rootstock network. Developers can deploy Ethereum-compatible smart contracts using the Solidity programming language, while miners can participate in merged mining to secure both Bitcoin and Rootstock simultaneously. Users can also explore DeFi applications, make transactions, or develop their own solutions using the RSK Infrastructure Framework (RIF) for payments, identity verification, and marketplaces.
Rootstock provides a variety of services, including the deployment of EVM-compatible smart contracts, decentralized finance (DeFi) applications, and faster transactions compared to Bitcoin’s base layer. It supports asset bridging between Bitcoin and Ethereum networks and offers tools like RIF for building scalable solutions in payments, identity management, and marketplaces. Additionally, it enables developers to create dApps while benefiting from Bitcoin’s unmatched security and scalability enhancements provided by the sidechain architecture.
